Gimp Paint Studio

GIMP Paint Studio (GPS) is a comprehensive, open-source resource package designed to transform GIMP from a standard photo-editing tool into a dedicated digital painting environment. Originally created by digital artist Ramon Miranda, it was built specifically by artists, for artists. Core Components

GPS is essentially a highly curated collection of presets and assets that replace or supplement GIMP’s default configurations. It focuses on mimicking traditional artistic mediums and includes:

Brushes: Over 100 professional-grade brushes, including the popular “Chaos & Evolutions” brush kit by David Revoy.

Tool Presets: Dozens of pre-configured options for the eraser, smudge, ink, and sketch tools to make cursor strokes feel natural.

Painting Dynamics: Specialized velocity, pressure, and random adjustments that simulate actual paintbrush behavior.

Interface Adjustments: Custom workspace layouts (via toolrc files) that maximize canvas space and reposition panels for easy access to color palettes and tool options. Important Historical Context

While GPS remains a foundational milestone for the open-source art community, it is important to note its current lifecycle status:

Compatibility: The official GPS package was heavily optimized for older versions of GIMP, specifically GIMP 2.6 and 2.8.

Current Status: The original Google Code GPS Archive project is outdated and unmaintained. Because GIMP’s modern engine handles brush dynamics differently, installing older GPS files directly into current versions of GIMP may cause layout conflicts or broken tool presets.

Legacy: The philosophy behind GPS succeeded because modern iterations of GIMP now ship with significantly better default brush dynamics, native tool presets, and drawing-tablet optimizations out of the box. Furthermore, many digital painters who originally used GPS have since transitioned to Krita, a sister open-source project built explicitly from the ground up for illustration.
